Third week of November

Well well, busy as a bee, busy as an ant, busy as me.

Firstly, rest in peace, Kong Kong. It's been 11 years since you've passed on. And yes, I have missed you dearly.

On a lighter note, on Saturday there was a side job at Yum Cha for me to do.. Delivery man..

Sunday: Computer Repairman... Installed a new graphic card (4850HD) for my cousin. And realising that that the power supply was insufficient, we had to get another 500W power supply.

Tuesday: New PS3 game - Assassin's Creed 2 Region 1 S$85.

Rest of the week, spending time and thinking of my love.

A dose of responsibility-pushing

Today, I had my first dose of responsibility-pushing. Responsibility that has been pushed unto me, that is.

Here's how it went.

I was in-charge of a certain Worksheet with money, and dimensions of buildings. This certain Worksheet originated from my supervisor on 3rd Nov 2009 (I keep track and date everything sent to me).

My supervisor was the person who created this Worksheet with all the numbers and measurement. I did not edit anything, as I was still oblivious to the work to be done. So I was then betrothed with the responsibility of the Worksheet on 6th Nov 2009. After having done all the necessary changes to the numbers (leaving the measurements untouched), I then submitted it for vetting.

Upon submission, a mistake was made known to me. Hence, I clarified with my supervisor who in-turn insisted that the mistake was on my part, claiming that I had put in the wrong measurements. Knowing that I was not in the wrong, I told him that it was himself who entered the initial measurements, and it had been untouched from Day 1 (3rd Nov 2009). He then told me that I should not make this kind of mistake, he told me that I had to do my own calculations to get the measurements.

So, being the new guy, I had let this incident pass by. I know I was not the one who wrote the wrong measurements initially.

I learnt that mistakes are to be made, and lessons are meant to be learnt.

This will NOT happen a second time. Period.

Day 03 of Working-Land - Meeting minutes

Let's start off where all working days start off - in the morning. I decided to leave later to see how late I would be if I had missed my usual bus. And damn, I think I'll just stick to my usual bus.

The "next" bus took so long to arrive, that the crowd that gathered had filled the entire bus stop. And well, when it finally arrived, it was a single-deck bus. Figures. I rather settle with the double-deck one - at least got seats.

So I arrived at the office, 2 minutes late. And lo and behold, no one was there still! I think I'll just be there earlier, and leave office at 6pm on the dot.

Came lunch, my department decided to lunch with the procurement ladies. JTC and vegetarian food went well together. And then, it rained. Figures.

After lunch, more training notes to read... Then came the main highlight of the day, THE MEETING. Spent the entire rest of the day in the meeting room, listening and taking down notes. I did my part by contributing an excellent find... There was a mistake on one of the amounts. We were making a loss instead of a profit. So after I had corrected it, we made a huge profit! Yay for my company, boohoo for the client. But as long as I have the interest of the company at hand, I'll be alright. :D

Tips of the day: Stay alert, be prepared, look out for mistakes! And well, always listen to your seniors, they have "been there and done that". Experience counts.

Day 01 of Working-Land - The Rules

Alright, for the benefit of those people who have not experienced the working world yet, here's some rules for surviving Working-Land.

Rule #1:
Always arrive early for the 1st day of work... I arrived at 8:20am although work starts at 8:30am.

Rule #2:
Read the contract carefully. Check your name, i/c number, address. Check the notice to tender period, check the medical benefits, check all the other stuff. I checked, and double check.

Rule #3:
Orientate yourself to the new environment. I was introduced to all the staff on the 3rd level, 2nd level and the 1st floor receptionist. Most importantly, check where all the emergency exits are.

Rule #4:
Know how to use the photocopy machine. That's the most basic thing to do... Starting from the bottom of the corporate ladder... Well, the 3rd rung.. 1st two rungs are the cleaner and the coffee-boy.

Rule #5:
Reading the training material. Basically what I read for the rest of the day.

Rule #6:
Eat lunch with your department colleagues. That's what I did.

Rule #7:
Contribute your useful computer hardware knowledge to the department. Well, cos my other colleague needed to get a new computer for work, and he only had S$1000 budget. Hence, we visited hardwarezone.com and got prices for the new com. +Brownie points.

Rule #8:
Although a pre-employment medical check-up is free, bring more money for taxi fare. I only had S$10, and all of that was spent on the taxi fare to and from the medical centre. But check out Rule #9.

Rule #9:
Always take the receipt from the taxi driver. Just because you can claim transport allowance on certain occasions, such as mandatory medical screenings.

Rule #10:
Always leave work after your boss leaves. Well, my supervisor accompanied me through the medical screening. So I guess that qualifies.

And that's how you survive Day 01 of Working-Land. Stay tuned for Day 02 - Signs in the Office.

Fondest Memory

Start.

So here I am on the plane back to rainy singapore. Tears roll down my eyes each time I think about my grandma's final moments here on earth.

The feeling is just heart-wrenching. All my 24+ years of my life, she has in one way or another been taking care of me.

My fondest memory of my grandma is not a very pleasant one.

Rewind to the 90s, I was still in primary school then, only having just learnt what 'responsibility' was all about from cartoons on tv (amazing, what they show on tv in the early 90s).

My God-ma, who was rushing off for work, told me to keep her room door closed as she went to work. Me, being the obedient young boy I was, nodded in agreement. So, she left for work, leaving my grandma and I alone at home.

Rewind a little more, 3 couples stayed at my grandpa's house: grandpa and grandma, God-pa and God-ma, my dad and mum, and me, of cos.

Playback, there I was minding my own business, watching cartoons, when I noticed my grandma opening my God-ma's room door. So, I scurried over to where she was exclaiming,

"Why you open Auntie Cherry's (my God-ma's) room door?! She wants it closed!"

"I want to air the room." She replied.

"But Auntie Cherry wants to keep the door closed!" I strongly insisted.

"This is my house, I can open any door I want." She retorted.

"NO, this is Kong Kong's (grandpa's) house, this is NOT your house!" I 'smartly' replied and stormed off to watch my cartoons. Her face immediately changed and I think she threw a fit, not knowing how rebellious her eldest (and only grandchild) can be.

That night when everyone came home, my grandma re-enacted the whole scene and made a huge fuss and told everyone (my uncles and aunties, my extended family is quite huge) about what I said that the house was my grandpa's and not her's. (Which was a fact because I knew that the apartment belonged legally to my grandpa.) Being a primary school kid has its perks, not all of the primary schoolers are THAT ignorant you know.

Oh well, I had to face the music sooner or later from my parents, which eventually happened. Knowing that I was evidently right about whose house it was, I clearly didn't understand that I had hurt my grandma's pride quite a bit. Until today, my grandma's last day on earth, I still refuse to accept that it was her house also.

Stop.

And now, I regret every last bit of my righteous act. It has been too long, but I know that in her heart, she still loves me. And I, love her.

Thank You Lord, for taking my grandma to her true HOME to be together once again, after 10 long years, with my beloved grandpa.

I'll forever miss both of you.

I still cannot bear to think how strong I can be, when I am finally standing beside her coffin in about 5 hours. Chances are I would cry my tear ducts dry. Well, if I still have any tears left to pour out. People sitting adjacent to me in the plane now are giving me the "Why-is-this-young-man-crying-as-he-is-scribbling-on-his-pocket-pc" look.

I guess it's time to give it a rest and take a nap to recharge my bloodshot-eyes.

End.
